
The history of the commune is still young. It was founded in the middle of the 19th century.
On arrival of the first catholic workmen one rented a room of bar to be able to celebrate a mass. It was in 1864.
The parish Saint Clemens include the following communes: Hombruch, Persebeck, Salingen, Kruckel, Gross- und Kleinholthausen, Löttringhausen, Kirchhörde und Renninghausen, Gross- und Kleinbarop, Baroper Heide und Eichlinghofen.
Already in 1870 the first stone for the new church was posed. The ground was placed at the disposal of the parish by Baron Clemens von Romberg. The vicar Wilhelm Vogt had succeeded in collecting the nessary money for the construction of the church.
Already in 1872 a catholic hospital could be opened.
In 1884 the parish counted 4000 members.
In 1910 a catholic school, the school of the Grimm brothers, was added there.
In 1945, at the end of the second world war the bombs caused a significant damage at the church and the hospital. The priest Johannes Meiwes found his death during the bombardment. The church was rebuilt in 1948.
In 1931 there was already another church with Barop when the population became increasingly significant thanks to industrial rise.
All the churches of the neighbourhoods, Sankt Patrokli in Kirchhörde and Maria Königin in Eichlinghofen were founded starting from the church Saint Clemens.
Today the parish counts approximately 4500 members.
